About the Kapor Center
The Kapor Center is a family of interrelated justice-seeking organizations that work to reimagine and reconstruct a more inclusive and equitable technology sector. This role is the Chief Financial Officer of Kapor Enterprises (the family office) and Kapor Foundation. The foundation is a longstanding leader in equity in the technology field and is now focused on opportunities and challenges related to AI. The Opportunity
The Kapor Center is looking for an experienced CFO with a passion for the Kapor Center’s mission to provide strategic fiduciary oversight and ensure optimal efficiency and effectiveness of financial operations for the Kapor Enterprises (the family office) and the Kapor Foundation.
For mission-driven CFOs, this is a unique opportunity: Kapor Enterprises has begun the transfer of the personal assets (including direct tech startup investments, venture fund investments, and real estate holdings) to the Kapor Foundation; over the coming years, all assets will transfer, and you will lead the effort to ensure this happens in a smooth and effective manner.
The CFO will be a trusted advisor for our Principals, the Kapor Foundation CEO, and other stakeholders, supporting strategic long-term financial decision-making and day-to-day activities. Leading a small team, the CFO is responsible for financial planning and analysis, cash management, accounting, tax planning, and risk management.
The ideal candidate has a 10+ year track record of success in leading a complex financial operation, effectively leveraging technology to drive efficient financial processes, and experience in a family office/private foundation setting. Experience with venture and direct investment accounting is a strong plus. Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Finance & Accounting
- Lead the creation, maintenance, and delivery of timely, accurate, and useful financial reporting for all stakeholders, with a focus on customer service, clear communication, and efficiency
- Manage an efficient and effective annual budget development process to ensure alignment of resources with strategic priorities
- Assess, recommend, implement, and oversee all financial and accounting technology, tools, and processes; partner with CIO on investment technology, tools, and processes
- Lead operational and investment liquidity planning and cash management through the creation and maintenance of both short- and long-term cash forecasting
- Manage timely and accurate filing of all tax returns
- Review all month-end closing activities, including general ledger maintenance, balance sheet reconciliations and cost allocations
- Manage, maintain, and drive adoption of all organizational accounting, budgeting and forecasting policies and procedures
- Oversee the transfer of assets from the family office to the Kapor Foundation
Compliance & Risk Management
- In partnership with the President/CIO (who is an attorney), oversee the legal affairs of the family office and foundation
- Ensure legal and regulatory compliance for all financial-related matters within the Kapor Center
- Oversee the effective functioning of internal financial controls and safeguarding of financial assets
- Lead and optimize compliance and risk management strategies, including asset protection, monitoring and renewal of insurance coverages and investment oversight.
- Oversee external audits, serving as main point of contact with external firms and ensuring timely preparation and support of all audit requirements
Other
- Responsible for ensuring all financial strategies, goals, and objectives are aligned with the Founder’s overall mission, values, and risk tolerance; maintain a financial plan which encompasses wealth management, tax planning, estate planning, and philanthropic activities
- Manage relationships with all outside financial vendors - auditors, tax advisors, insurance, banks, and others
- Lead other complex financial projects or initiatives as requested to address evolving organizational needs
Qualifications & Skills
- CPA and/or CFP designation and prior experience in a similar position preferred, in particular within a family office & foundation environment
- Must have significant experience working and thriving in a family office environment
- Significant senior-level financial leadership (10+ years) in managing accounting, FP&A, and risk management teams and functions
- Broad experience or understanding of foundations, trusts and estate various legal entities; LLCs, S-Corporations, including tax and accounting for such entities
- Experience in oversight and analysis of investment performance, including public and private market investment valuations
- Proven ability to optimize financial systems to drive efficiency and effectiveness
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex financial information effectively to a variety of audiences
- Strong people management skills, experience managing and motivating teams to create a professionally rewarding and productive work environment

LOCATION
We are flexible on location for the right candidate, with a preference for the Bay Area, California. The Kapor Center office is located in the uptown district of Oakland, with excellent access to public transportation.
